Peñafrancia
Dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia,
the festival is held mid-September in Naga,
Camarines Sur in the Bicol region. Its roots
originate with a priest from the 17th century,
who began an intense devotion to our Lady of
Peñafrancia, which was then adapted by the
pious Bicolanos.
It begins with the
translacion,
where the
Lady’s image is carried by male devotees
in color-coded T-shirts
(voyadores)
to the
Metropolitan Cathedral of Naga. After masses
and a nine-day novena, a great fluvial
procession begins. Get ready to light candles,
wave your hanky and shout “Viva la Virgen!”
Kadayawan
Kadayawan is Davao’s harvest festival
celebrated in the third week of August,
when the province’s bountiful fruits and
flowers are on display and Davao’s southern
charms are most apparent. The main
highlight of this thanksgiving festival is the
indak-indak sa kadalanan,
a vibrant parade
that starts in the morning and traverses the
centre of Davao City, which is crammed with
floral floats bursting with colors. With talent
contests, dancing on the streets and fruits in
every corner, Davao buzzes with energy
and abundance.
Organized by the local government, the
event includes a sports festival, performances
by the local tribes and street markets.
