Maja Lyn Tabora
“I was crossing a busy corner in Hanoi
and got lucky when this man on a
bicycle gave me a quick, friendly
smile,” recalls Maja. This happy shot
wasn’t so easy to take, though, as she
was standing in the middle of a busy
road teeming with cars and motorbikes.
Self-preservation matters aside, a
panning technique did the rest in
making this picture work.
Al Linsangan
The photographer made moody symmetry out of Ha Long
Bay’s limestone formations. A native of Coron in Palawan,
he’s no stranger to such a landscape. “It was almost like my
hometown, but with a very different atmosphere because it
was cold there even at midday.”
A pretty girl in a traditional
ao dai
dress was too good a
photo-op for our Trekkers to ignore. Al politely asked her
to pose for an informal portrait at Hanoi’s 1,000-year-old
Temple of Literature. If you want to photograph a local,
sometimes the best solution is the most obvious: ask nicely!
