Garden state
As a result, there are currently more
than 50 parks all over Singapore —
from community and heritage parks to
island and nature reserves — with more
opening soon, including the much-
anticipated Gardens by the Bay
(www.
gardensbythebay.org.sg),
a multi-
function complex with urban gardens
and a large greenhouse that promises
to give guests a glimpse of blooms in
“perpetual spring”.
So next time you’re in Singapore,
take the fun outdoors. Most of its parks
are free, and readily accessible by
public transport in minutes.
YOU WOULDN’T
know it from the
city centre, but the tiny cosmopolitan
island-state of Singapore — best known
for its malls and hawker stalls — also
has an impressive number of outdoor
destinations that give you instant
access to nature’s pleasures.
It’s all part of a long-running
preoccupation with going green,
one that started long before
environmental concerns even came
into the picture. And you can’t get
a clearer goal than “a city within a
garden”, a vision they’ve been pursuing
methodically since the 1960s.
