SINGAPORE
The Kanjoos
May 10-13, 17-19
Adapted from Moliere’s famous French
comedy
The Miser,
the play is a love story
thrown into disarray by a stingy old man
whose avarice for money supersedes
everything else in life. We find out about
it in the course of one day, when Kanjoo
Swamy — part-time manufacturer of toilet
fittings, part-time loan shark and full-time
skinflint — plans to trade his daughter Priya
off in marriage to his business associate,
as well as ruin his son Chari’s romance; all
while plotting his own future by consulting
a matchmaker!

Magayon Festival
April 10–May 10
Catch half of the month-long Magayon
Festival in Albay, which recognizes
the origins of the Mayon Volcano as
inspired by the legend of the Daragang
Magayon (beautiful maiden). Street dance
competitions get the locals involved, as do
the other aspects that showcase Albay’s
colorful history, culture and livelihood. A
highlight: the Mutya and Ginoo ng Magayon
contest.

MANILA
Forbidden Broadway
May 11–13, 18–20 and 25-27
If you love Broadway (and a good laugh),
you mustn’t miss
Forbidden Broadway.
Dubbed “the funniest show in New York”
by
The New Yorker
and “gut-bustingly
funny” by
The New York Post,
it debuts
on the Manila stage in time for its 30th
anniversary this month. Joel Trinidad
directs Upstart Productions Inc.’s version
of the smash-hit musical revue, which
also includes beloved songs from
popular musicals like
Les Misérables,
The Phantom of the Opera, Rent,
Mamma Mia!, Wicked
and
Cats
— with
hilariously clever new lyrics that poke
fun at the shows themselves.
