Jakarta may have its huge glitzy malls,
but in its outlet stores Bandung boasts
a shopping scene that has the capital’s
residents scurrying here on weekends.
Dozens of these warehouses-on-
steroids lie throughout the city, housing
mounds of export overruns from
famous designer brands. You can find
the most popular stores along Jalan
Setiabudi and Jalan Riau — hotspots
like Rumah Mode and The Heritage
Factory Outlets brim with local tourists
on bargain-hunting expeditions.
The merchandise is all delightfully
affordable, of course, but caveat
emptor: there might be items with
minor factory defects thrown into the
mix. We recommend looking over that
Zara blouse or Nike shirt before you
make your way to the cashier!
If cheerfully cheap is your game,
however, look no further than
Cihampelas — Bandung’s self-
proclaimed “Jeans Street”. You can’t
miss its long row of store façades
sporting tacky-yet-amusing statues of
Hollywood and comic-book characters.
Inside these warehouses is discount
heaven — jeans of all shapes, sizes
and labels (export overruns, fakes and
everything in between) share space with
souvenir T-shirts, footwear and all kinds
of accessories. The styles on offer here
are generally for the younger set, due to
the area’s close proximity to a number of
universities. Prices are student-friendly,
though — and whatever your age,
there’s sure to be something worthy of
your wallet.
