Fortunately, Macau’s fishing community
may not be high and dry yet. If you’re
visiting Coloane (the south island) at
dusk — perhaps enjoying the Hac Sa
Beach Park Café sardines that it grills
in a hut in the garden — you might see
the lamps of local shrimp catchers in the
South China Sea. Residents head
here too; they buy fresh snapper or squid
— sometimes directly from fishermen
who run stalls in Patane Market — and
cook the catch at one of the beach’s
many public barbecues.
While a little along the shoreline
in Coloane Village, on Rua dos
Navegantes, a huddle of stilted
dwellings is home to an ageing fishing
community. A few of the families
here open up shop each day to sell
their own sun-dried flounder or bags
