EXPLORE the foodie delights of
the Amphawa floating market.
Don
,
t miss the traditional
delicacies that can be enjoyed
right on the riverbanks, like
coconut ice cream with roasted
peanuts and jackfruit.
SHOP around the various stores
along the floating market — the
little stuffed fireflies are cute.
Don
,
t worry about haggling
over the price; they don , t jack it
up for tourists.
RELAX The foot massage on
the boat, done exclusively by
Tanasin Thai Massage at the
Amphawa floating market, is a
must. For THB1,000 (PHP1,371),
you get to float down the river
for an hour and a half. You get
light snacks and a wonderful
traditional foot massage.
CHECK OUT the Thai Dessert
Museum, where they show
guests how to make traditional
Thai desserts! The desserts on
display are made of resin, but
look as delicious as the real
thing. If you
,
re actually hungry,
there are dozens of stalls at the
market that feature classic
Thai goodies.
WHEN IN
AMPHAWA…
Before the end of the day, we duck
into Tanasin Thai Massage. My dusty
feet are soaked in a bowl of warm water
and soap, which is just the thing after a
day of tramping around Amphawa and
its environs. Aboard a large boat loaded
with comfortable lounge chairs, a
smiling and uniformed masseuse starts
on a luxuriously long foot massage as
we float down the Mae Klong at sunset.
As darkness falls, the boat drifts down
the river; in the lush foliage, fireflies
flash and glitter. Many of the graceful
homes on this side of the river are lit up
at night, and people sit outside to enjoy
the cool evening breeze. It is the height
of decadence: fireflies in the trees on
one side, the starry sky on the other —
plus pampered feet — with the gentle
currents of the river beneath us.
