We asked some of our globe-trotting and culture-curious contributors:
“Where’s the farthest you’ve gone from your home base?”
Jorem Catilo
PHOTOGRAPHER, COVER
AND “STONE AND SHADOW”
“Sydney, Australia — where
people drive on the ‘wrong’ side
of the road. Unlike a lot of big-
city Pinoys, they like to walk
to get around; malling isn’t
a major pastime. In fact, the
shops close really early — at
5pm — which can be alarming
to a Pinoy like me!”
Edgar Alan
Zeta Zap
WRITER, “NORTH BY
NORTH-EAST”
“After two flights and a 16-hour
ride on a rickety bus from
Kolkata in India, I made it to
the former British hill station of
Darjeeling, an area best known
for its tea and UNESCO-listed
railway. I loved the cultural
harmony of its ethnicities.”
Ria Limjap
WRITER
“It would have to be a little
town called Portsmouth, New
Hampshire in the US East
Coast. The landscape was
the most beautiful I’d seen
in the whole country. I took
a stroll in town, and an hour
into it I noticed I was the only
Filipino, and maybe only
Asian, around.”
Something to Smile about :)
Maya O. Calica
WRITER, “FASHION WITH
A MISSION”
“A musher’s camp in Juneau,
Alaska in July 2009. I flew
about 19 hours from Singapore
to Tokyo and then to Seattle,
and boarded a luxury liner
that took me to Juneau —
where I rode a bus and then a
helicopter to get to this camp
on a glacier. There was nothing
but mountains around us and
Alaskan huskies pulling people
on sleds. It was the best day of
my life so far!”
Jof Sering
STYLIST, COVER AND CHIKKA
LOOK BOOK
“Geographically, it’s France; but
otherwise, I’d say it’s Boracay,
where I lived for a couple of
years. I led such a different
lifestyle — I biked to work
and went for months without
wearing a pair of shoes. It was
way out of my comfort zone,
and I loved every minute of it.”
