Dauin, Dumaguete City
This is a story made around the
world. He’s from Canada, she’s from
England. He learned how to dive in
the Bahamas, she in Australia. They
met and fell in love in Honduras while
getting their dive instructor and dive
master certifications, and have since
then worked in Cyprus, Thailand,
Malapascua in Cebu, and Nicaragua.
You’d think that “home” would be a
The life aquatic
complicated concept for Tim and Zoe
Latimer, but the answer is really easy:
the Philippines “will always be home
for us, even if we leave,” says Tim.
Now married for over seven years,
their story starts a decade ago and
halfway around the world, on Utila, a
small island in Honduras. “The short
version is that we met over a lost key.
On Zoe’s first night on the island, she
lost her house key,” smiles Tim.
“Luckily, Tim came to my rescue
and offered me a place to stay. We
have been living together ever since!”
Zoe adds.
They have finally put down roots
in Dumaguete City, opening their own
resort in November 2011. “Liquid is
an amalgamation of all the places
that we have worked in and traveled
to. Bits and pieces that we have seen
or experienced other places come
together here,” explains Tim. But what
makes the eight-cottage resort truly
special, he says, is that it “is not just
a resort; this is our home. We want
people to come and stay with us, and
leave with the feeling of having been
part of the family.”
It’s very easy to feel completely
at home at the Latimers’, not only
because of Zoe and Tim’s warm and
easygoing demeanor, but because
Liquid is run very much like the home
that it is: the staff are well-trained and
genuinely friendly, and dinners are
served at a communal table shared
every evening.
And if that’s not enough, their two
kids running around — five-year-old
Solymar and three-year-old Kai —
serve as the resort’s best ambassadors.
Having their home and professional
lives collude so completely has always
worked well for the entire family. “I
think as a team Tim and I work very
well together. We are best mates,”
says Zoe. “I love the fact that I can
talk to Tim at any time during the day
about anything.”
“The big advantage of having our
own place is that the kids are here with
us all the time. When we go to work,
we are only a stone’s throw away from
the kids,” agrees Tim. “This is our life.
It sounds like a cliché, but when you
love what you do it is not really work.”
