Action star
As the lead in
The Hunger Games,
the year’s most
anticipated book-turned-movie, Jennifer Lawrence shows
off some killer moves with a bow and arrow. It looks like she
just hit stardom’s bull’s eye. By Nena Wearing/Celebritext
JENNIFER LAWRENCE
may have missed
out on playing Bella Swan in the
Twilight
franchise, but it doesn’t really matter —
because she’s now fronting
The Hunger
Games
as Katniss Everdeen. Nominated for
an Oscar for
Winter’s Bone,
the 21-year-old’s
resume also includes
X-Men: First Class
and
Jodie Foster’s
The Beaver
. Here, she reveals
what life’s been like, being in the limelight.
How much fun was it to do
all these action scenes?
It was a blast! It was the most physical movie
I’ve ever done, but really fun.
What do you think was the
most challenging?
The physical aspect, actually. It was a very
physically challenging role. It was very active.
How did you approach
the character of Katniss?
Were you scared about the
anticipation a role with such
a big fan base would bring?
No — getting nervous about the anticipation
is kind of like Googling yourself. You just can’t
even go there because it’ll only do bad things.
I just knew that I would give absolutely
everything I had and try my hardest. That
was aIl I let myself focus on. If everybody
hates it, that sucks.
Who would you choose
in real life: Peeta (Josh
Hutcherson) or Gale
(Liam Hemsworth)?
I have no idea. I’d probably be in the same
pickle as her.
You
,
re kind of an “it” girl at
the moment. Are you glad
you didn
,
t get the role of
Bella in
Twilight
?
No. I think that everything happens for a
reason. Everything happened the way that
it did, especially because I really like Kristen
Stewart in the
Twilight
movies. I can’t really
imagine anybody else doing it; I think
she’s a great Bella. I’ve never really been
disappointed about not getting anything. I
mean, I was just with every actor in New York
or LA auditioning for whatever’s out there.
But I felt that whatever is meant to be, will
happen. I actually had no idea what they
were. When the movies came out, I went
“Wow!”
Do you think you are
prepared for the fame that
this trilogy is going to bring?
Of course not. I don’t think anybody can
prepare themselves for that. But then
again, the movies could be a huge flop and
everybody is getting excited about nothing!
Who knows?
So what new skills did you
have to master, besides the
bow and arrow?
Well, you just took one. There was archery,
free-running and stunts and rock climbing,
harness work, combat.
Did you dream of acting
when you were young? You
never took acting lessons.
I think it was always there, but it was never
a possibility or a reality until I was 14 and got
discovered. And then I read my first script and
went on auditions. I felt like I’d found my thing
to do — that feeling of being exactly where
you need to be at the right time.
What other projects do you
have coming up?
I’ve just finished a movie called
The Silver
Linings
with Bradley Cooper and Robert De
Niro, which was directed by David O. Russell.
Is it nice working with
Bradley Cooper?
Yeah, he’s great.
Now that you
,
re a star
yourself, do you still get
starstruck on
The Hunger
Games
set?
Well, Donald Sutherland, definitely. Lenny
Kravitz is actually one of my best friends’
dads, so by the time he was on set we had
already known each other. I kept getting in
trouble because I was used to calling him “Mr.
Kravitz.” But he was like, “You have to call
me Lenny! This is embarrassing.” So I finally
started calling him Lenny.
What do you do on a day-off
to wind down?
Watch TV or read or just hang out.
Have you read anything
good recently?
I’ve just finished
Anna Karenina,
which
makes me sound like a snob. But I really
loved it. I didn’t expect to, but I loved it, and I
just saw… oh, actually, I hated it. I shouldn’t
talk about that!
What about on TV?
I love
Modern Family.
And I’ve always loved
Friends
. I’ve seen every episode of
Friends
but I’ll still watch it.
