of the fascinating characters of Oz: the
Wicked Witch of the West, the Tin Man, the
Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked
Witch of the West,
the show is a rollicking
and entertaining exploration of mass
hysteria, misconception, the misfortune
of being misunderstood, and finally
overcoming the odds.
At the heart of it is the unlikely friendship
between two girls who start off as polar
opposites — Elphaba, an oddity with
emerald green skin but who’s gifted with
uncommon intelligence and a talent for
magic; and Glinda, the vain, ambitious and
blonde epitome of all that’s popular and
envied. Circumstances that form the meat
of the story force both girls to the roles that
society deemed fit for them— the strange,
non-conformist girl becomes the Wicked
Witch of the West, and the easy-on-the-
eyes and all-around-pleasant one becomes
Glinda the Good.
With music and lyrics by Stephen
Schwartz (whose past credits include the
Academy Award-winning animation classics
Pocahontas
and
The Prince of Egypt
),
and the book by Winnie Holzman (whose
work for TV includes
My So Called Life
and
thirtysomething
),
Wicked
has been dubbed
as “one of the most successful shows in
Broadway history.”
For the Singapore production, the cast —
led by Jemma Rix (Elphaba), Suzie Mathers
(Glinda the Good) and Bert Newton (The
Wizard) — brings the musical to life with
hits such as
Defying Gravity

For Good.
