TOUCHDOWN
You can hire a van, jeepney
or tricycle from the Laoag airport to get to your
destination in town. However, an eco-friendly
means of getting around the city is the
kalesa
or
horse-drawn carriage.
BY DAY
There are a number of ancestral homes
around the city, and caretakers allow free
entrance (or a minimal fee) for tourists to witness
how rich Filipino families lived in the 19th century.
You can also visit Paoay Church for its rich history.
BY NIGHT
Eat
bagnet
(pork fried three times)
and
pinakbet
(local mixed vegetable dish
with bagoong) at any family-owned eatery or
carinderia
to get a feel of the true spirit of the city
and its people.
SLEEP
Palazzo de Laoag is a quaint hotel near
the town’s capitol that will remind you of your
grandparents’ house, right along with the delicious
home-cooked meals.

TOUCHDOWN
To get to town, you take two
tricycles: one from the airport to the main road,
and then another to the town proper. It should cost
you no more than just PHP10 per ride. And the
rides are fairly short.
BY DAY
Stay in Sta. Ana Cagayan, which is four
hours away from the city, and head to an old
Spanish lighthouse at Cape Engaño, Palaui Island.
Alternatively, you can go for luxe accommodations
at Sun City Cagayan Holiday and Leisure Resorts.
BY NIGHT
The people of Tuguegarao are not big
on clubs and bars, but prefer to share drinks with a
small group of friends. Befriend the locals and let
them regale you with stories. Or you can always
go to Kusina Cagayana for their buffets.
SLEEP
Hotel Carmelita near the GV Florida
Bus Terminal offers simple and comfortable
accommodations for as low as PHP650 a night.

If you love to go to the
markets, vegetables (particularly garlic)
are very cheap in Laoag.
BEST DINNER
Café Herencia, right
across the Paoay church, is home to the
Pinakbet Pizza. Go in the early evening
for a view of the church by sunset.
