When temple fatigue sets in, you

the countryside on a different
kind of tour
TEMPLE HOPPING
in Siem Reap is
good fun, but it can get tedious after a
while — especially if you’ve spent the
last few days doing nothing but this.
Angkor veterans speak of “temple
fatigue”, that creeping feeling of ennui
that you get after visiting a temple ruin
too many. When this happens, you
might be better off with a slight change
of pace. We recommend going out
to the countryside on a different kind
of tour, one that makes the journey
as interesting as the destination.
Thankfully there’s no shortage of these
in Siem Reap — check out these four
new ways to experience Cambodia.

Few things are as exciting as
a motorized romp through the
countryside, plowing through the
rugged terrain on a quad bike. With its
handlebars, four mud-moving wheels
and a 330cc engine, this is a ride
worthy of Lara Croft. The ATV (All-
Terrain Vehicle) is the choice vehicle at
Quad Adventure Cambodia (
adventure-cambodia.com
),
an outfit
that runs off-road tours in the Siem
Reap area. These ground-pounding
rides range from easy two-hour trips
around the neighborhood rice paddies,
to hardcore five-day journeys to some
of Angkor’s distant temples.
Skill levels aside, however, each tour
offers a healthy dose of dust, grime and
adventure. A quick test drive gets you
acquainted with the machine, and then
it’s time to get dirty. Accompanied by a
local guide, you traverse trails that wind
past Buddhist temples, streams and
sleepy Khmer villages. The scenery
is gorgeous and the terrain packs just
enough challenges to keep your spider
senses tingling. Rest assured there
are plenty of ancient ruins along the
way, but you’ll probably be too busy
enjoying this power ride to notice.
Thankfully most of Quad Adventure’s
tours make a stop at the spectacular
Roluos group of temples, some 13km to
the east of Siem Reap — that way you
get to mix some history with all that
adrenaline.

raider on four
wheels!
