Anna Vo
Anna Vo was raised in Vietnam’s
fashion dynasty. Her mother, Le Thuy
Nga, launched Thuy Nga Design in
1987
and has remained one of the
most well-known labels in Vietnam. It
did not come as a surprise then, when
Anna opened her boutique and café in
October on Dong Khoi Street, Saigon’s
High Street. The 28-year-old designer
picked up three foreign languages
and set out to be a career diplomat,
but notes that her passion for fashion
couldn’t be ignored. Her collection
includes contemporary feminine pieces
in Italian and French silk and linen.
What is the key element to all of
your designs?
Architecture. All my designs have
special cutouts, or contrast piping
mixed with organza fabric to create an
edgy look. This counters the front of
all my designs, which are usually kept
very simple. The five words to describe
my label are: unique, minimalist,
fresh, chic and effortless. European,
especially Italian, influences [can be
found] in most of the designs. All of
my fabrics are imported from Italy and
France. The clothes usually feature
clean lines and simple patterns. The
central theme of my brand is to make
every design stylish but functional.
Simplicity and practicality are also key.
How would you describe Saigon style?
There is not a specific word to describe
Saigon style. Saigon is evolving every
day and this includes its fashion
sense. I would say it is dynamic, fresh,
comfortable and youthful — since
nowadays there are many youngsters
who are willing to adapt and try on new
styles. [Examples include] modern chic
minimalism or even punk and edgy.
However, the majority is still keen
on the, what I call “Dolce and Cavalli
look”: fitted dresses and tight trousers.
