We spent several hectic weeks putting together our big year-ender

jazzing up a location with Christmas trimmings and shooting our
cover, poring over seemingly endless pages of copy and hundreds
of photos, chasing after contributors, and hunting down one personal
hero, travel writer and novelist Pico Iyer, whose essay “Why we
travel” has inspired legions to explore new places and revisit the
familiar with new eyes, again and again (you

these pages again soon!). Those long hours of hard work were made
less grueling by the nature of what we were doing: tailoring a whole
edition around the idea of coming home to family
