TRAVELING
on a tight budget is a challenge — but it can
also be a priceless exercise in stretching the imagination
and, therefore, incredibly fun, especially in a place that’s
been dubbed Asia’s World City. Hong Kong, where 8,000
skyscrapers form the iconic urbanscape, is a melting pot
of world cuisines and a shopper’s paradise of merchandise
that run the full spectrum — from the super cheap to the
blindingly expensive.
Just over an hour’s flight from Manila, the city has always
been a favorite getaway for many Pinoys — after all, Hong
Kong Disneyland is a dream-within-reach for kids, and so
is Mongkok for bargain hunters. But there are even more
reasons to make the trip: you have streets lined with galleries
of contemporary art, kitchens run by superstar chefs and a
skyline that’s still one of the most impressive in the world.
But if the prospect of staying three days and two nights in
glitzy Hong Kong with only HK$2,000 (roughly
US$260/PHP10,807) in your pocket makes
you just want to buy a Wong Kar Wai DVD
instead, take heart: not all that glitters costs
serious gold. There are as many ways
around the city as there are ways around a
small budget.
Peso-pinch your way through a weekend of
good food, fine art and fantastic city views.
