Growing up, one of the most useful bits of wisdom
I
ever received was also the simplest: "Be yourself," my dad often told me. I
carried around a hazy understanding of that piece of advice for a while until
one of its many meanings became clear to me through practice. We all have
something to contribute, and if you bring your unique talent and energy to
the table, people will know it's yours and you'll have made your mark.
For this issue, we were fortunate enough to meet the passionate
entrepreneurs who are helping shape the personality of
Bohol as a
"boutique" destination
(page 48).
We've also been clued in to an
amazing project involving Streetlight, an NGO devoted to underprivileged
kids, three young Norwegian architecture students, and
a village in
Tacloban simply called Barangay 37
(page 86).
All of them
came together in the spirit of
bayanihan,
or community effort, to build a
much-needed study center that's now an exceptional example of organic
architecture, using locally sourced materials by the locals and for their
specific needs. All of them have certainly left their mark and made a
difference.
