DESIGN NOTES:
Opened in 1912, this wonderfully nostalgic establish-
ment is a blend of art deco and ’40s-style Hollywood glamour. By 2015
it will complete a major refurbishment, though the iconic banana-leaf
wallpaper and pink exterior will remain.
CLAIM TO FAME:
Guests have included Gloria Swanson, Buster Keaton,
Rudolph Valentino, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Yoko Ono and
John Lennon. Howard Hughes lived here for years, booking up to four
bungalows a night so nobody would know which one he was in.
BEST PLACE TO HANG OUT:
Most of the action takes place at the Polo
Lounge. Frank Sinatra, never publicity-shy, liked the booth next to the
piano—the most visible table in the restaurant.
SIGNATURE COCKTAIL:
For last year’s centenary celebration, the
head bartender created the 100-Year Sidecar: Hennessy X.O. Cognac,
Cointreau and lemon juice, served up in a gold-dusted cocktail coupe
that’s yours to keep. The price tag, appropriately, is $100.
