. He
spent a busy few days
overseeing this month’s
fall fashion special

employs classic Scottish
motifs and materials
but in a contemporary
context. “We wanted
to look at tradition with
fresh eyes,” Bauti says.
TRUE
NORTH
During executive editor Chris
Wright’s recent chat with Simon
Groom, director of the Sco ish
National Gallery of Modern
Art, the talk turned to the ways
in which Edinburgh makes you
think about time. “You have geo-
graphical time, with Arthur’s Seat,” Groom said, referring to the peak that looms over
the city, “and historical time, with the castle …” Before Groom could finish the thought,
Wright quipped, “Don’t forget closing time!”
Of course, Scots have to deal with this sort of thing a lot: the outsider’s tendency to go
on about haggis, kilts, booze. But they’re not easily daunted. Rather than shy away from
the stereotypes, Scots reclaimthem, celebrate them. You’ll see this spirit in our Scotland-
themed fall fashion special (page 72), in which ancient castles form the backdrop for
apparel that gives old conventions a fresh twist. Who knew tweed could be so cool?
