that has been brought into the United States to
develop these resources.
“A lot of these foreign companies want to get
a toehold in the U.S. market because they want
to understand this new technology,” he adds. “So
we are seeing investment from countries such as
China, France, Japan, India and even Australia.
It helps us because we are using foreign funds to
develop these resources.” And create jobs.
One of the more exciting aspects of the develop-
ment of the Utica and Marcellus shale formations
comes in the form of the byproducts produced,
specifically ethane, which can be used as feeder
stock for a wide variety of petrochemical and
plastics manufacturing operations. West Virginia
is one state taking full advantage of these higher
priced byproducts of natural gas production by at-
tracting ethane plants to the state. “We have some
of the largest coal reserves in the world, and now
we have some of the largest natural gas reserves,”
says West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. “When
you look at what we learned in this last recession, it
is that people understand we need to make things,”
he adds. “We need to be manufacturing products.
You can’t provide opportunities to our citizens by
relying on the service economy. The foundation of
our ability to bring back manufacturing is going to
be built on a plan that capitalizes on our fossil fuel
reserves, whether it’s natural gas, coal or oil.
“The world is hungry for West Virginia’s energy
resources. With coal and gas as our core strength,
the Mountain State’s energy diversity powers
the nation and the world,” Tomblin says. “Global
demand continues to fuel coal exports, and our
whole region is benefiting from natural gas
coming from our vast Marcellus Shale deposits.
But beyond fossil fuels, our state is blessed with
a full array of energy resources that also include
biomass, geothermal, hydrogen, hydro, wind and
solar power.”
While solar panels and large windmills o en take
center stage in photo opportunities for renewable
energy projects, companies like SolarReserve and
Pra &Whitney are taking renewable energy
sources to a new level. At its new Tonopah, NV,
Crescent Dunes Solar Facility, SolarReserve is
