ENERGY IS POWER.
And not just in the
obvious sense of making everything
from jets to personal computers to
home appliances to manufacturing
equipment run. Energy also is the
power that activates the global economic
engine. And that is very good news.
Because energy, in all its myriad forms,
is growing. The development of new
energy resources may, in fact, be growing
at a rate that even outpaces population,
at least in North America. As technol-
ogy progresses, underlying geological
resources in North America that once
were trapped have been freed up. As a
result, the United States is in the midst
of an energy boom the likes of which
has not been seen in this country since
Edwin Drake first planted a rig in Oil
Creek near Titusville, PA.
It is a modern-day Malthusian tale.
Technology once helped to increase farm
production, meeting the world’s appetite
for food at the dawn of the Industrial
Revolution. Now, technology is helping
to meet the world’s appetite for energy.
