SAM POLCER,
Hemispheres
’ executive
editor, was suitably
impressed by all the
history and culture
when he traveled to
Ecuador for this month’s
cover story (“Three
Perfect Days: Quito,”
page 96), but the
delicious food is what
really blew him away.
“Between that and the
altitude, I’m surprised I
got anything done,” he
says. “All I wanted to do
was take a siesta.” His
fellow staffers have not
offered much sympathy.
Coming Out
Swinging
TOMCHIARELLA
initially tookupgolf to escape
thewriter’s life (hi ing the linkshelpedhimfor-
get anovel thatdidn’t sell), but ashewent along,
he says, “I wanted more and more to write
about the sport, about the act of playing.” He’s
since profiled some of golf ’s best players and
most redoubtable courses for suchmagazines
as
Golf Digest
and
Esquire
—forwhichhe is nowwriter at large—and published
the essay collection
Thursday’s Game
. In thismonth’s links extravaganza [“The
Meaning of Golf,” page 88], Chiarella tackles sand traps with PGA legend Gary
Player, unearths holes that even the pros dread and offers insights for golfers
of all stripes. As for the state of his own game, Chiarella says, “I still need to
appreciate what works for me, instead of eating myself up because I’m not a
long driver anymore—and never could hit a 3-iron.”

RIA MICHELLE
is a fashion stylist,
blogger and “all-around
media whirlwind” living
in South Florida—which
made her a natural pick
to scout and shoot our
spread on Miami style
this month (“What to
Wear: Miami,” page 58).
Despite photographing
well-dressed city-
dwellers everywhere
from New York to Los
Angeles, Michelle
reports that “the most
challenging place to
shoot street style was
on my home turf.”
RACHEL SLADE,
senior editor at
Boston
magazine and editor of
Boston Home
, has been
told she has an “elastic”
sense of rhythm (which
may be why she’s
working in journalism,
not fronting a band).
Yet that didn’t keep
her from venturing to
Africa to report on the
rebirth of Ethiojazz in its
native land (“The Ballad
of Addis Ababa,” page
82), where she also
developed a taste for
superfresh coffee, lamb
tibs
and watery beer.
