STAY
CAMERONHOUSE
BACKSTORY:
This imposing
18
th-century mansion
was owned for genera-
tions by the influential
Smolle family, who sold
it in 1986. An $80 million
refurbishment in 2007
aimed for a blend of
luxury and tradition,
with log fireplaces and
tastefully muted tartans
alongside plasma TVs
and an infrared sauna.
ROOMWITH A
VIEW:
All suites
overlook Loch Lomond
and the Highlands—
some of the loveliest
countryside in the U.K.
but the Colquhoun
Suites allow you to take
in the splendid scenery
from an equally splendid
vantage point (though
the walk-in showers
alone are worth the
price of admission).
WHAT YOU’LL
FIND JUST
OUTSIDE:
Manicured
lawns and distinguished-
looking trees lend a
Downton Abbey” feel;
beyond these is exten-
sive woodland abu ing
Loch Lomond. For a
less rugged outdoor
experience, the hotel’s
par-71 championship
golf course, the Carrick,
is close by.
HOT PLATE:
The hotel’s
Michelin-starred Martin
Wishart eatery offers
dishes like Ayrshire
grouse, but for the truly
adventurous, breakfast
at the Cameron Grill
includes the most
deliciously disagreeable
thing you’ll ever eat:
haggis. As prepared here,
this offal-y foodstuff is a
spicy, savory delight.
UNEXPECTED
TREAT:
The
270-
strong selection
of whiskeys? The
champagne cruise?
The personal butler?
The water slide? The
guided nature walks?
The falconry and
archery sessions?
Nice touches, yes, but
none of them can hold
a candle to … the
seaplane rides!
