What it really looks like in our
favourite spots on the Germanwings
route map. This issue: the colourful
island of Burano in the Venice Lagoon
► DIE GESCHICHTE
Burano ist schon seit dem 6. Jahrhundert
bewohnt. Der sumpfige Boden der Insel
eignete sich nicht zur Landwirtschaft und
so lebten die Inselbewohner vom Fisch-
fang. Dabei dienten die gefangenen Fi-
sche eher als Tauschobjekt zum Kauf an-
derer Waren, als zum Verzehr. Die Insel
erlebte eine Blütezeit vom 16. bis zum 18.
Jahrhundert dank der Spitzenstickereien,
die die Frauen im typischen Burano-Stich
fertigten und exportierten.
►DIE FARBEN
Die Insel ist für ihre konstrastreichen,
knall-bunten Fassaden bekannt. Der Le-
gende nach waren es die Frauen der Fi-
scher, die die Häuser so farbenfroh anmal-
ten. Dies sollte der Orientierung ihrer
Ehemänner dienen, die somit bei Nacht
und Nebel oder sogar beschwippst ihr
Haus vom Boot aus leicht finden konnten.
Wenn ein Haus heutzutage neu gestrichen
werden soll, muss die Farbe vorher mit den
Behörden abgesprochen werden.
► THE COLOURS
Burano is well-known for its colourful
appearance with each house being
painted in its own vibrant colour with
maximum contrast to the neighbouring
building. Legend has it that it was the
fishermen’s wives who painted them like
that so their (possibly drunken) husbands
would be able to spot them easily from
the water, even at night. The colour of a
new coat of paint on any of the facades
has to be approved by the authorities.
► HISTORY
Records show that Burano may have
been inhabited as early as the sixth
century. The marshland on the island
wasn’t suited to agriculture so the
islanders made a living from fishing. The
fish they caught wasn’t eaten as much as
it was used as a currency of sorts in
exchange for other goods. The island
gained importance when the women who
lived there started making and exporting
high-quality lace in a distinctive style.
