We can’t wait to see how
Wes Anderson’s new film,
The Grand Budapest Hotel,
brings his trademark quirk
to a Mitteleuropean setting.
After all, New York’s coolest borough
has kick-started more cultural trends
than most nations. I’m just flabbergasted
it’s taken so long for anyone to realise
how fun it would be to combine a retro
amusement arcade with a bar.
The Ton Ton Club is the first such
‘barcade’ in the Dutch capital. It’s also
notable for another reason: it’s slap-
bang in the city’s red light district.
Things are not what they used to be in
this once-notorious part of town.
Following the lead of London and Paris,
this district of disrepute is becoming
reputable (well, kind of), with new bars,
boutiques and businesses. We were there
to chart this gentrification (and play
some
Daytona USA
) – check it out on p46.
Another US trend that’s spreading
like wildfire across Europe is brunch.
Things are moving on apace from the
days of eggs Benedict, and the very best
places now offer killer cocktails and fab
hangover-busting fare. Turn to p57 for

spoken Brit is hot property in Hollywood
right now, thanks to his stress-busting
