The American
School of Barcelona
The school continues to expand with its leading International Baccalaureate programme
the american school
of Barcelona (ASB)
is thriving in spite of the economic crisis in
Spain. In fact, the student population has
grown by 10%over the past three years.
The school will continue to grow in 2014-
2015. How can that be?
Is it the academics? ASB has offered
the International Baccalaureate Diploma
programme since 2007, with results well
above the world average. Graduates have
been accepted to the most prestigious
universities in North America and Europe,
including Brown University and Cornell
University in the USA and Oxford
University in the UK.
Is it the teachers and curriculum?
ASB hires the best native English-speaking
teachers from around the world, all
attracted to the city and its lifestyle.
In fact, many teachers give workshops
to professionals from other schools in
Europe or act as IB examiners. Emphasis
is on critical thinking, creativity, application
of skills, and collaborative projects.
Is it the well-rounded focus of The
American School's programmes? Students
attend Model United Nations (MUN)
conferences throughout Europe, and ASB
recently hosted Barcelona's first major
MUN event. There is also a wide range
of community-service programmes
– students act as English-language
assistants in local schools and build
houses in Nepal. Students participate
in volleyball, soccer and swimming
tournaments locally and internationally.
Or could it be the school's expanding
and renovated facilities? A new Lower
School Building will open in September,
2014. The main building will be renovated
in the summer of 2014 and become the
Upper School Building with a new library.
There is high quality wi-fi with one-to-one
laptop and tablet programs.
Perhaps it is the enriching sense of
international community in Barcelona
and the school? The American School
of Barcelona has a nice blend of close to
two-thirds international and one-third
local families. More and more international
executives make Barcelona their home
base. They find Barcelona to be a family-
friendly, cosmopolitan city with convenient
connections to other destinations.
International students learn Spanish and
experience a rich local culture in a dynamic
city while Spanish students develop
global mindedness in an English-speaking,
international community of over forty
nationalities. All students receive a top-
notch 21st-century education that opens
doors to universities throughout the world.
