1 Koshari Street
€€€
(
56 St Martin’s Lane, WC2N,

) There may be less bustle around this
hole-in-the-wall than those in Cairo, but it serves food
with the same authentic taste. The signature
Koshari
, a
carb-loaded Egyptian plate of lentils, rice, pasta, spicy
tomato sauce and fried onions, is flavoursome, quick and,
unsurprisingly, very filling.

Cucina povera
, or "peasant cooking", is the mantra
at this buzzy new Italian eatery. The menu, which leans
on sharing plates, is delightfully rustic: arancini are
crisp and zesty while the chargrilled sardines burst with
Mediterranean flavours. Mamma would be proud.
3 Flesh and Buns
€€€
(
41 Earlham Street, WC2H, +44

) Street food from every corner of the globe
is continuing its onslaught into London, and Taiwanese is
apparently next on the list. Specialising in
hirata
, steamed
Chinese buns stuffed with shredded barbecued meats and
salads, it’s the cool kids’ latest must-eat in Covent Garden.

4 Megaro
(
23-27 Euston Road, NW1 +44 203 432

This quirky, basement bar playfully embraces
a photography theme with its cinema chairs and film
negatives on the ceiling. However, masterly concocted
cocktails such as the gin-based Lavender Hill Mob Fizz,
and plates of cured scallop ceviche with green strawberry
and almond, are a far cry from the usual movie popcorn
and soda set-up.
5 Dirty Martini
(
158 Bishopsgate,
EC2M +44 844 371 2550
) For a cheeky drink opposite
Liverpool Station, head to this chain’s third instalment. If
the huge, underground space heaving with those in the
know doesn’t impress, bespoke martinis such as lavender
and honey, and pear and rosemary, will.

Before
All Star Lanes ,
bowling in London meant
shabby municipal lanes with limp food and tired pop
music on a loop. Now, while competing on the group’s
stylish lanes in Holborn, Bayswater, Brick Lane or
Stratford, you can enjoy cocktails and tasty, diner-style
food for an all-round cooler experience.
