What's exciting us
this month
ART APPEAL
After 10 years and €375m,
Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum
reopened. We were there
to marvel at the star turn,
Rembrandt’s Night Watch.
FRIED AND TASTED
The buttermilk chicken
at East London’s newest
red-hot eatery, Clove Club,
is finger-licking good
and it’s gluten free.
ROMAN FIZZ
Made with Prosecco,
Aperol Spritz is our
summer cocktail crush
best enjoyed in Rome’s
Hotel de Russie.

GETTY, RIJKSMUSEUM
Mine was at Reading in 1996 and I’ll
never forget watching Weezer, my then-
favourite band, on stage, while some crazy
bloke crowd-surfed in a bathtub.
It must be one of the more unusual items
ever brought to a festival, but that’s the
beauty of these events. Everyone has their
own personal way of doing things, whether
that’s dancing to beats on a beach, taking in
a poetry reading or, well, throwing oneself
into a crowd of rock fans, bath in tow.
That’s the idea behind our rather
snazzy cut-out-and-keep cover, where we
asked our Facebook friends to share their
own festival must-brings. It’s all part of
a bumper festival special that includes
a guide to picking the right one (p28 ,
fashion tips (p83 and, topping it off, we’re
heading to Glastonbury. For one weekend
in June, this small corner of Somerset
will, once again, become the centre of
the musical universe. Barring the odd
fallow year, it’s been doing this for more
than four decades, so it’s no surprise that
Michael Eavis has a few stories to tell – as
we discovered when we met him (p64 .
And, after getting muddy in a field,
how better to unwind than by island
hopping in Croatia (p94)? If you know
where to look, you can have the place
virtually to yourself. Sheer bliss in
anyone’s book and a perfect antidote to all
that dancing. Enjoy the flight and see you
next month.
