i’ve lived in this area
for the past 10 years and
seen it change dramatically. When I first moved
here there was a definite edge. Now, a lot of
fashion designers, bands, artists, and
journalists all live round this area – it’s a hub
of creativity.
THE SHACKLEWELL ARMS
[

was bought up two
years ago by the same people who own the
Lock Tavern and a whole network of other very
cool pubs. They own about 25 of them, so they
really know how to do things right.
On a Friday or Saturday night, it’s filled with
hipsters, but it’s still really friendly.
There’s no snobbery. It’s just a
really good pub – a bit rough
round the edges, but really
cosy. There are guest ales all
the time and a regular ale
festival, and they also do a
variety of food – pie and mash, hotdogs and, on
Sundays, there’s a traditional roast.
“
In the music room at the back, bands play
seven nights a week. The Horrors have done a
secret show and I put on a Skrillex show here for
125
people. It’s closely connected to Field Day.
We do the aftershow here and often have our
Field Day meetings here too. The Shacklewell
also has a stage at Field Day, so many of the
bands who play here go on to that.
“
One of the best things about the pub is its
Secret DJ app [
secretdj.com
].
A playlist maker
puts a load of tracks on every month,
including the music of bands who
have recently played or will
play there, so it’s a great way
to hear new music.”
