(
41-42
Largo da Graca, tel: 21 886 2679
)
The best places to eat in this city are often unpretentious
neighbourhood restaurants such as this one. No prizes for
decor, but friendly service, great fresh fish and
leite crème
(
crème brûlée) more than make up for it.

Clube dos
Jornalistas
€50
(
29
Rua das Trinas, Lapa, tel: 21 397 7138
)
A relaxed, but upmarket place in the residential district
of Lapa, the Journalists’ Club dining room is open to the
public. Expect a Portuguese and Mediterranean menu with
contemporary touches. If the weather’s good, eat in the
leafy garden at the back.

A Brasileira
(
120
Rua Garrett,
Chiado, tel: 21 346 9541
)
This legendary café houses an
important collection of paintings by the Portuguese avant-
garde. It’s also a good place to watch the life of the city pass
by, listen to buskers, and sip your drinks in the company of
the statue of Fernando Pessoa, which keeps eternal vigil
outside. Get here early in high season – it fills up fast.

Café Tati
(
36
Rua da Ribeira Nova, tel: 21 346 1279
)
This
exceptionally welcoming space has great live music most
Lisbon
nights, ranging from jazz to alternative folk and country.
Meals prepared with ingredients from the nearby Ribeira
market are also on the menu.

MinisteriumClub
(
Terreiro do Paco, 72 Ala Nascente, tel: 91 693 1884
)
Recently
the old government offices in this emblematic square have
given way to clubs and bars. On Saturdays, the hallowed
halls of this old building reverberate to techno and house
music, with international DJs from 11pm until 6am.
6*
The Retro Shop
(
103
Rua Rodrigues de Faria, Alcantara,
tel: 96 514 8062
)
is an interesting mix of restaurant and
antique shop in the buzzing LX Factory, Alcântara, a former
warehouse now filled with shops, galleries and eateries. It
specialises in furniture and bric-a-brac from the 60s and
70
s. There’s good grub, too.

Explore the vibrant neighbourhood of
Madragoa
just across the tramline from the more famous Bairro Alto.
Replete with interesting little bars and restaurants, it also
has some of the most thrilling views across Lisbon and the
River Tagus.
