With red-blooded Argentine chef Diego Jacquet heading
the team, it’s no surprise the steak is splendid at this buzzy
West End eatery. The other dishes on the sharing menu,
like grilled octopus with potato salad, show this is a kitchen
on top of its game.

For the pre-theatre crowd,
this new opening is something of a boon. Specialising in
dishes with rich flavours (we loved the homemade ravioli), it
provides a cut above the usual bruschetta-and-penne meal
deal.

Good service can make a restaurant.
Superb service with exceptional food will make it
outstanding – as the team pulling off this Brazilian-Japanese
fusion proves. Soft-shell crab house rolls and scallop
ceviche are early highlights, while scrumptuous dishes like
blackened butterfish will have you booking a return visit.

A new addition to south-west
London
London’s night scene, this cosy, underground “speakeasy”
bar is having no trouble pulling in a crowd as stylish as its
interior. Try signature cocktail Roxy’s Grapevine (vodka, with
passion fruit, grape, lychee and lime) for something with a
bit of zing. If you’re peckish, pop to the upstairs restaurant
for some top-notch tapas.

The seaside city of
Brighton
(
just half an hour from
Gatwick) is always popular, but there’s an extra reason
to visit this month as the city’s Festival and Fringe bring a
melee of cultural treats to the table. Artists Open Houses,
stand-up, and dozens of sideshows will turn the seafront
into a carnival. Runs 4 May – 2 June.

Rosemary Shrager’s Cookery School
There’s far
more to British cuisine than just roast dinners, as English
TV personality Rosemary Shrager shows at her eponymous
cookery school. Launched this month in the quaint spa town
of Tunbridge Wells – 50 minutes from Charing Cross – keen
chefs can learn how to cook classic dishes with a modern
twist on either a full-or half-day course.
