The Chocolate Train from Montreux to Gruyères makes
for a tasty treat when visiting Switzerland
switzerland has had
a long love affair
with chocolate, and its produce has
earned an international reputation for
high quality. Its population leads the
world in its consumption, with the
average Swiss person eating over 25lb
of chocolate each year, during which
time the country will produce 150,000
tons to be enjoyed at home and abroad.
And so, when you are visiting the land
of chocolate, it follows that you should
investigate just why the Swiss hold it so
close to their hearts.

than riding the Chocolate Train. Here you

coaches or the grand and exclusive Belle
Epoque Pullman carriages, as the train

visit the fascinating Cailler chocolate
factory, where a tour and a delicious
tasting session are on offer – an
unmissable outing for any serious
chocoholic! And, while at Gruyères, you
can stop in at the magnificent Gruyères
Castle and discover how the eponymous
cheese is made at the demonstration dairy.
The train runs every Monday,
Wednesday and Thursday from May to
October, and every day in July and
August. Reservations are compulsory
and can be made at Montreux
GoldenPass station or by internet. The
