All aboard!
From glaciers to palms, there's no better way to experience Switzerland's array
of breathtaking landscapes than on board the delightful Bernina Express
the bernina express
was singled out by the
prestigious
National Geographic
magazine
as one of the world's most beautiful train
journeys – and it's hard to disagree! During
the trip, the train covers the entire 122km-
long UNESCOWorld Heritage route
from Thusis to Tirano, over the border in
Italy. Departing from Chur, it takes you
through the wild valleys of Albulatal and
into Upper Engadin, from where it climbs
to the railway's highest point at Ospizio
Bernina (2,253m above sea level) before
descending to Poschiavo-Tirano.
Altogether, the journey takes about
four hours and spans magnificent
landscapes, extremes of climate and a
variety of cultures and languages. From
its winding switchback tunnels to the
towering viaducts of Albulatal's valley, to
the Alpine glaciers that seem almost close
enough to touch, the Bernina Express
takes you on a breathtaking journey that
never fails to impress.
Since the summer of 2006, the Bernina
Express has been running purely touristic
services between Tirano and Chur, Davos
or St Moritz, with the sole purpose of
showing off some of Europe's most stunning
panoramic views. It does not, in contrast to
the Glacier Express, have its own onboard
catering service. Instead, the train arrives
in Valposchiavo at around noon – just in
time for you to enjoy a delicious lunch of
pizzoccheri neri
noodles, a local speciality,
in the historic town of Poschiavo, or a pizza
on the piazza in Tirano. After their midday
break, travellers can then choose between
a return trip on the Bernina Express,
following the Bernina-Albula route, or a
ride on the popular Bernina Express Bus,
which runs through the Veltlin region, via
Menaggio and on to Lugano.
