FORMENTERA
IBIZA
Simon Kurs, editor
Unlike most people, who come for a break from
partying in Ibiza, my first visit was as a one-year-
old – something my mum loves to remind me of.
I’ve since been several times and it still blows my
mind. A 30-minute boat ride takes you from the
world’s hedonistic capital to a palm-fringed
paradise. It’s no surprise it was used in those old
Bounty TV adverts, as it looks like the Caribbean.
ÎLE DE LA CITÉ
PARIS
Sarah Warwick, deputy editor
Home to the towering Notre Dame, this island
in the Seine is my favourite place in Paris. I make
a beeline for it on every visit, and only then do I
really feel like I’ve really arrived. A great memory
was seeing the sunrise here after a friend’s 21st,
sitting on a bench with a bottle of Château de
something. We felt so cultured and bohemian,
but we were probably a public nuisance.
BRAČ
SPLIT
Mat Wiggins, art director
There’s something unique and special about
being on a small island. It’s in how tranquil and
distant they can feel, like being in a bubble. Mix
that with sunshine, amazing seafood, friendly
locals and the most beautiful beach in the
Adriatic – Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) – and that’s
Brač. Hiring a two-man dingy and sailing around
the coast remains an all-time holiday high.

It’s the colours. I can still see that first glimpse
15
years on. Lined up on the esplanade: mum,
dad, sister, sister, me [

the first non-
Algarve holiday in years – and bang! We’d been
hit. Intense turquoise sea, picket fence-white
cliffs, deep emerald-green foliage. “Are we in
the currybean?” the youngest piped up. “Could
be,” my father replied. “Could be.”
ISLAY
GLASGOW
Julia Holmes, picture editor
My dad leaning against a crumbling wall while
carefully wiping cowpat off his jeans: that's how
I remember holidays on Islay. Someone would
always end up falling in something. But after our
messy, wet walks over hills and across deserted
beaches, a wee dram of whiskey from the trusty
hip flask would sort us out and we’d be ready to
conquer anything.
SICILY
PALERMO
Liz Granirer, sub-editor
Western Sicily has an anarchic feel to it, which
led us to plot a crow’s-flight course across the
island on dirt roads, past burning fields (visitors
are told not to get involved in local feuds)
and, eventually, get quite lost. Finally, we saw
another car. “Do you speak English?” “Of
course,” said the driver, “I’m from New York!”
As were we – what a small world!
