“
it’s not just because
it’s a unique-looking place,
BLÉ

has also brought a whole new
dimension to baked goods in this town.
“
Open 24 hours a day, the neoclassical building
on the pedestrianised Aghias Sophias Street is
home to the tallest wood oven in the world – 12m
high – which is the work of minimalist architects
Claudio Silvestrin Giuliana Salmaso. Thanks to this,
the quality of the bread is always excellent.
“
Different yeasts produced on site – a process
that takes days – give a unique flavour too. Italian
panzarotti and French baguettes stand
next to loaves of bread made to
recipes from various regions of
Greece, while the floor-to-
ceiling central shop windows
are filled with pastries from
all around the world, which
make a perfect accompaniment to the great coffee
that’s served here.
“
My personal favorites are breads made with
yeast from whole-grain cereals, the butter
croissants, traditional Cretan green pies and
focaccia with artichokes. Sometimes I drop by for
a morning coffee and a bagel. I treasure the
random encounters with friends early in the day
over a cup of coffee; during the evening for a salad
or light dish at the cosy common table; in
summertime for an ice cream; or late at night to
get some bread for breakfast.
“
Its décor is inviting: stone, wood and
large windows allow the daylight in,
warming the space all day. A
meeting place for locals, those
who work nearby and others
who come to visit from afar,
it is an attraction on its own.”
