History on every corner
Just 7km from Ljubljana's international airport, the historic town of Kranj offers plenty
for visitors to explore, both on its charming streets and in the surrounding countryside
one of the oldest
towns in Slovenia, Kranj
was first inhabited thousands of years
ago by settlers attracted by the strategic
possibilities offered by its position on a rocky
prominence overlooking the confluence of
the Sava and Kokra rivers. The Kokra flows
through the centre of Kranj today, forging
a small canyon at its heart. This provides a
home to a wide range of fauna and flora, and
is now protected as a natural heritage site.
Meanwhile, at Pungart, a popular walking
spot grants spectacular panoramic views
across the town and the surrounding area.
Thanks in no small part to this long
history, Kranj boasts a rich cultural heritage.
This is most evident in the old part of
town, where you will find many fascinating
examples of Medieval architecture and
Khislstein Castle, which stands above
the old crossing over the River Sava and
forms an unmistakable part of the town's
cityscape. Nearby, there are beautiful
arcades and a fountain designed by the
renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik,
which exist in harmony with the Medieval
aesthetic of the rest of the town.
In addition, Kranj is dedicated to
preserving the heritage of France Prešeren
Slovenia's greatest poet, who spent his
final years living there. Every February,
the town recreates the atmosphere
of the 19th century, which can also be
experienced at the international
organ-grinder festival on 19–21 July.
Under the old town centre, visitors
can explore a unique labyrinth of tunnels,
originally built during the Second World
War. These tunnels remain an important
monument to Kranj's technical heritage,
and a variety of events are held here
throughout the year.
This summer, the town's Medieval towers
will host an exciting programme of cultural
events, joining "the Beautiful Gorenjska"
exhibition in the castle and concerts in the
Khislstein open-air theatre. Meanwhile,
popular festivals to be hosted by Kranj
this year include the Carniola Festival in
June, Kranfest on the last weekend in July,
and the Jazz Kamp in August.
