But will these changes lead to a dampening of its frontier spirit?
Not if Thiéry has her way. “I am staying to make sure La Friche’s
spirit remains,” she says. Other residents have similar views. In Le
Dernier Cri’s dude-cave of a workshop – a screen-printing atelier/
shop/gallery where walls bear the covers of flashy underground
’
zines, like lowbrow tapestries – owner Pakito Bolino might be
physically 48, but his attitude is pure 15. “I landed here 17 years ago,
initially to play a gig with my band,” he says. “La Friche had a cheap
space to rent. It just felt right. You see, Marseille is a bit messy – and
only mess allows more mess to grow peacefully.”
This year, the mess will attract an explosion of new visitors and
for good reasons. The Ici, Ailleurs Festival, from 12 January to 31
March, will feature artists from around the Mediterranean; followed
by This Is (Not) Music, from 25 April to 9 June, an urban arts event
set around board sports. Other events to look out for are Les
Grandes Carrioles, an artists and chefs food-cart project, and Des
Images Commes des Oiseaux photography exhibit, from 6 July to
29
September. There’s more, but it’s clear that now, as 20 years ago,
exciting innovation is an everyday event for the people at La Friche.
“
I always want to see where it’s going,” Thiéry says. “We are far
from having reached the horizon line yet.”
