E D I T O R ' S
L E T T E R
The latest Alpine thrill ride sees
daredevils set off down a steep ramp,
before launching themselves across
a river, all the while attached to an
elasticated cord. Not only does it sound
like an amazing rush (I urge you to check
it out on YouTube), it’s also one of the
more inventive activities now on offer in
resorts across the network.
You can read more about it on page
71,
where we’ve got all your ski needs
covered in an A-Z guide – from the
highest altitude resort to the best place for
a bit of celeb-spotting in Zermatt.
There’s always a sense of adventure
in the air right about now, as we look
forward to throwing ourselves, head-on,
into whatever the new year may bring.
One person who took this to a slightly
scary extreme was writer Oliver Thring
as he ventured to Madeira for a spot of
canyoning – a fast-growing extreme sport
that sees people jumping off waterfalls.
For fun. There are few places better suited
–
or more beautiful – than the Portuguese
island and it also provides visitors with a
welcome blast of winter sun. Read about it
and see the terrific pictures on page 60.
It’s not all fast-paced action, as we tour
Valencia’s stunning modern architecture
(
p82) and discover how to live like a local
in the vibrant lakeside city of Zürich (p53).
The fact this included eating piles of rösti
–
the delicious potato cakes that are a
Swiss national dish – was, of course, a very
welcome bonus. See you next time.

GOLDEN DELIGHT
Who’d have thought
Zurich’s local beer was so
good? On our recent trip
there we discovered the
joys of Amboss. A delicious
thirst-quencher to be sure.
