Winterwonderland
Covering an area the size of New York City, the Cwanton of Jura
proves that Switzerland offers far more to its winter
visitors than just the Alps
perched on top of
the 1000m-high
Franches-Montagnes plateau and
characterised by its spruce and fir forests,
the majestic Jura Mountains, wooded
pastures and dry stone walls, the Canton of
Jura provides a remarkable backdrop to a
magical winter retreat.
The town of Saignelégier, widely known
for its association with the Franches-
Montagnes horse breed, boasts a range of
excellent winter sport facilities and quality
accommodation options. Set among the
fir trees, l'Hôtel Cristal’s marvellous spa
and wellness centre offers a myriad of
rejuvenating treatments, while l’Hôtel-
Restaurant GeorgesWenger, with its two
Michelin stars, is the ideal spot to enjoy the
best of the local cuisine. Adventurous visitors
may decide to head out in search of the Yeti,
as they strap on a pair of snowshoes and
spend an unforgettable night in a bivouac.
Although renowned for cross-country
skiing, for which there are over 100km of
trails, the Canton of Jura also has plenty to
offer to downhill skiers, such as the family
pistes in Les Breuleux and Les Genevez,
only a fewminutes from Saignelégier.
Meanwhile, the region's vast plains provide
the perfect conditions for kite-skiing or
snowboarding. Alternatively, visitors can
also try dog mushing or take a ride in a
traditional horse-drawn cart.
Whatever you choose to do, you're
sure to be hungry afterwards, and nothing
beats a fondue in the Auberge des Chatons
or a delicious rösti in one of the quaint
farmhouse inns to finish the day.
