SWEET SURRENDER
We knew sherry was back
on trend, but Jerez-based
expert Annie B showed
us a great trick. She dips
homemade macaroons into
sundried Moscatel. Yum.
RED ALERT
With its industrial vibe,
Moscow’s arty bar district,
Red October Island, should
top your list when flights
start next month. We’ve
just got back and it rocks.
EGGS-ELEVEN
Breakfast at the Shoreditch
branch of Dishoom may
well be our favourite way
to start the day. We love
the
akuri
(
spicy eggs) at the
Bombay-inspired café.
By which, of course, I mean don’t do
anything of the sort. While much of
Europe rests under a blanket of snow or,
more likely, in a cloud of murky drizzle,
the temperatures there sit nicely around
20
°, the sun blazing even in winter.
Our correspondents were in Oualidia, a
seaside town two hours west of Marrakech
that’s been dubbed the country’s answer
to St Tropez, seeking out north Africa’s
first-ever surf school. Judging by the
pictures (p54 , they had a cracking time
and, because this resort remains a secret
spot, it’s the kind of place where you can
soak up winter rays without the crowds.
If you’re looking to dish out sympathy,
though, then writer Christian Koch may
deserve it. For our monthly challenge, we
sent him to a New Age commune in the
Italian Alps to find… wait for it… the time
machine they claim exists there.
It wasn’t all bonkers. Damanhur has
been a spiritual retreat since the 1970s
and thousands visit each year to practise
yoga, take part in self-improvement
classes and generally escape the bustle of
the real world – not a bad idea if you’ve
been over-stressed. But did he get to time
travel? Turn to page 49 to find out.
I might be moaning about the weather,
but we’ve been embracing the cold this
month too. On a trip to Alta Badia we met
the Michelin chefs turning mountain huts
into gourmet hubs. We also donned our
glad rags for a ski fashion shoot in
Innsbruck (p78 , where you can be carving
the slopes just 20 minutes after landing.
Now, that’s what you might call a
perfect winter break. Enjoy your flight
and see you next month.
