it’s often been
described as ‘the orchard of Europe’,
which sounds like somewhere you’d go for a snooze
under an apple tree, but Murcia’s not sleeping any more.
Over the past few years, it’s evolved into one of Spain’s
coolest places for a night out. We went in search of the
top New Year’s Eve shindigs...

TAPAS AND TIPPLES
With its fountain and fragrant orange trees, Plaza de las
Flores certainly acts as a beautiful reminder of traditional
Murcia, but it’s also smack bang in the middle of the city’s
stylish new tapas-bar scene. Head to our favourite bar,
El Pulpito (
16 Calle Pascual, 30004, +34 968 213 965),
for its
signature dish of
pulpo al horno
(aromatic, baked octopus).

LUXURY LIVING
Overlooking the river in the south-east of the city centre, this
is where Murcians come to push the boat out. Amid the
marble-floored salons of Siete Coronas
(5 Paseo de Garay,
30003, +34 968 217 774, tinyurl.com/mm4re47)
, live music, DJs
and a menu with traditional
jamón ibérico
and smoked
salmon will provide a cut above the usual gala dinner.
