Hollywood Historical
After independence in 1956 there was a
blossoming of self-confidence among the new
elite of the city, expressed in a number of
extraordinary villas built in the Palmery. This thick
belt of palm groves to the north-west of the city
became known as the Beverley Hills of
Marrakech for its eclectic style, with strong visual
links to Hollywood epics such as
Ben-Hur.
When the Rhoul family wanted to give their
family retreat a makeover in the early 1990s they
called on ‘the pillar man’, Moroccan architect Aziz
Lamghari, who unashamedly admits to giving
free reign to his flights of fancy. His open-plan
garden, planted in the exuberant French
Protectorate style, is home to a gorgeous
colonnaded swimming pool and seems to have
been designed for a life of film-star glamour. Its
magic worked; now a smart hotel, the Palais’
visitors book includes the signatures of Tom
Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio.
