Eat the best roast. Ever
It’s controversial, but we say
there’s no Sunday lunch better
than that found at the
Hand
and Flowers
in Marlow,
Buckinghamshire. The pub’s owner,
Tom Kerridge (

),
has won two
Michelin stars for his food but,
he says, cooking British food isn’t
about the accolades but doing
“
the simple things everybody loves
perfectly every time. We didn’t set
out to win Michelin stars. We set
out to use good techniques on the
finest ingredients, like curing our
roast beef in treacle for 24 hours,
to get the very best results. It’s
about getting all those things you
love at home – the crispy roast
potatoes, the fluffy Yorkshire
puddings – really right.”
Describing himself as a “jeans
and white trainers” guy, Kerridge
says his upbringing on council
estates around Gloucestershire
continues to play a big role in his
attitude to food. “I like to make it
as affordable as possible,” he says.
“
Sunday lunch is time set aside for
family and friends to get together.
I want to give them the ultimate
roast experience.” Believe us, he
certainly manages that.

Walk Hadrian’s Wall
This 1,900-year-old, 120km-long
Roman fortification provides a
backdrop to one of the best strolls in
Britain. Bus it from Newcastle to Haltwhistle,
head east to the forts, stay the night in Twice
Brewed (

),
walk the crags
to Housesteads and get the bus back. Boom.
