Old faithful
The ramps and alleys
of Gibraltar’s old town
will lead you through
the Moorish Castle
complex to its highest
point, the Tower
of Homage, which
proudly flies the
British flag from its
battlements – just as
it did when Admiral
Rooke captured the
Rock in 1704. While
the precise origins
of the castle are
unknown, work on
the original structure
is said to have been
completed in 742AD,
making it the first
Moorish fortification
on European soil.

Young pretender
If you’re in search of
glitz and glamour, look
no further than Ocean
Village. A short walk
from Casemates
Square, this new
marina and luxury
high-rise development
has added a gleam to
Gibraltar’s waterfront.
With busy clubs and
bars, a selection of
restaurants and
a state-of-the-art
casino, it’s the place
to see and be seen
among the locals.

Dish of the day
Casemates Square
or the nearby public
market are perfect
places to enjoy a
breakfast of
churros
.
These fried-dough
snacks, covered in
sugar and dipped in
hot chocolate, are as
popular here as they
are in southern Spain.
