I’m talking, of course, about the Olympic
Games. It’s nearly a year since that
fabulous opening ceremony with its
razzmatazz, pageantry and the Queen
jumping out of a plane. It kicked off a
fortnight when Brits justifiably got to feel
really good about themselves.
There is, however, far more to this
sceptred isle than the ability to put on a
cracking show. This issue we celebrate the
Best of British (p67) with 50 great
experiences to be had in Old Blighty, from
the tastiest Sunday roast to the ultimate
country-house retreat. We also toast age-
old traditions, flag up cutting-edge
developments and pay homage to British
eccentricity. And in the spirit of all good
celebrations, we baked a cake – you may
have noticed it on our cover.
In Germany, there’s another
celebration going on. It’s 200 years since
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published
their folk stories entitled
Children’s and
Household Tales
.
Two centuries on, the
brothers’ dark fables still resonate, giving
our deputy editor, Sarah Warwick, the
perfect excuse to fly over and drive the
new Fairy Tale route – and sleep in a real-
life castle. Read all about it on p51.
Elsewhere, we checked out Malmö’s
buzzing music scene in advance of the
Eurovision Song Contest, which comes
to the city next month (p58) and
discovered Croatia’s secret foodie
obsession: oysters (p103).
