obviously, la vache
means ‘The Cow’ in
French, but in the case of this restaurant
(
Attleas Mountain; tel: +41 (0)27 771 3291
)
it’s more like ‘Holy Cow!’
There are plenty of reasons why I like it
here. From a skiing perspective, it has an
awe-inspiring view of Mont Gelé – a famous
free-riding mountain – right above it, so while
you’re eating you can see skiers coming down
the face of the mountain at 40° gradients.
There aren’t a lot of places with this view.
From a food perspective, meanwhile,
there’s no doubt that it serves the best
burgers in town. The pizzas are top-end
too. I normally have The Dallaglio:
spicy salami. Lawrence Dallaglio,
James Blunt and Carl Fogarty
are part-owners, so they’ve
each got a pizza named after
them. It’s run by the people
who also run the nearby Farinet resort – the
main hub in the centre of town – and it has a lot
of the same buzz. The staff aren’t stuffy. It’s
definitely a younger generation working here,
who really get what a skier needs.
The interiors are very well done. Looking at
the place, you’d imagine it would be expensive,
but it’s not. Because I bring clients here, that’s
important. You can get a lasagne for CHF20
(
€16), which is the cheapest in Verbier.
The outside space comes into its own in
spring, when DJs and bands play on the terrace
to a couple of hundred people. It’s a bit like La
Folie Douce in Val d’Isère – Verbier’s
first taste of on-mountain
atmosphere. All in all, it’s
informal, a lot of fun,
high-quality and affordable.
A combination you don’t
often get in the mountains.”
