“
for a break
in a busy shopping day, I often bring
my clients to
SALUMAIO
(

Via Santo Spirito;

).
It’s a café in the
courtyard of the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum,
a small and hidden treasure right in the centre
of the Golden Quad. In the 1800s, the Bagatti
Valsecchi brothers turned their home into
a living museum of Renaissance decorative
arts. Not everyone knows Salumaio is here,
but some of Milan’s elite have their food
prepared and delivered every day.
“
The first time you come, take
a walk through the
gastronomia
and see the freshly prepared
food – gnocchi, handmade
noodles and pasta. I’d
suggest an antipasto of
freshly cut meat, mozzarella di bufala and burrata.
A
primo
would be one of the magnificent pastas,
such as tortellone filled with ricotta cheese and
spinach,
saltato
[
lightly fried] in butter and sage.
For wine, try a Greco di Tufo or Gavi.
“
I’ve been coming here for 20 years. The
waiters are the same – they all know the menu
by heart. The location is amazing, surrounded
by statues from the museum; it’s very tranquil,
while outside the Via Monte Napoleone is
bustling with shoppers.
“
The Milanese love Salumaio,
whether they’re in show
business, fashion or sport.
You’re sure to be
in the courtyard with
someone famous.”
