Situated on chic Via dei Condotti, this café’s old red velvet
sofas have borne the weight of legends like Goethe and
Byron. Two centuries later, it’s still the height of elegance.
Porta Portese
In the Trastevere district is the largest flea
market in Rome. Enter at Piazza Porta Portese for clothing,
and houseware. Enter from Piazza Ippolito Nievo if you’re
after antique furniture, and embroideries. Open every
Sunday from dawn until 2pm.

Lago Maggiore
One of the most impressive of the
Italian lakes and only around 100km north-west of Milan.
Trekkers can easily get there by train for one of the many
boat trips just casting off again for summer.
