The Cathedral is an experience that’s hard to beat, but
a day’s sea kayaking across the channel betweenGozo and
Comino comes close. We paddle our way over to the famous
Blue Lagoon, accessed from theMediterranean through a
narrow cave. Pulling our kayaks up on to a narrow spit of
beach, we’re surrounded by deep pools on one side and a
shallow expanse of turquoise water edged by pleasure
cruisers on the other. A snorkel back through the cave brings
us into openwater, with shoals of fish hugging the base of the
cliffs. Shafts of light penetrate the water to the seabed below,
illuminating the gracefully swayingworld beneath. It is
strangely freeing to float on the surface at the will of the
current, the only sound in your ears your own breathing.
The afternoon is spent paddling along the coastline,
through a series of lagoons, caves and natural arches. I have
to admit that I struggle back to Hondoq Bay, my arms
aching with the effort. But with the sun slowly sinking
behind Gozo, dappling the water with light, it’s a pleasurable
tiredness that means a cold beer by the beach is utterly
deserved, as well as incredibly welcome.
Malta may claim the handsome city, the glamorous
marinas and the buzzing nightlife, but Gozo has something
infinitely more precious. It’s been an eye-opening
experience, visiting this little-known jewel of the
Mediterranean – a tiny time-warp island that’s unspoiled and
full of character. With its unparalleled natural beauty, this is
a place to come and seriously unwind from the 24/7, in that
magical space between ocean and sky, sunlight and water.
