WORDS LILY HOWES, EMMA FEATHERSTONE
ADRIANMOURBY
A freelance journalist for
20 years, and regular
contributor to
The
Independent
, Adrian
Mourby has covered the
world from the Arctic to
Antarctic circles, through
Eastern Europe, China,
India, Africa and the
Americas. Thismonth, his
work took him to Italy to
follow in the tyre tracks
of the great, vintageMille
Migliamotor race (p82).
“It was a glamorous, noisy
event [entered] bymen in
huge, beautiful cars that
went faster than anyone
had thought possible,”
he says. “They tore
through some beautiful
Italian countryside too,
quite often crashing and
killing themselves. I went
slower to enjoy the view –
and survive.”
TARA STEVENS
Writing an insider’s
guide to Barcelona (p66)
was an easy ask for Tara
– after 11 years covering
food and culture for
Barcelona Metropolitan
magazine and
Condé
Nast Traveller,
among
others, she knows the city
inside out. She spoke to
some of Barca’s movers
and shakers, and found a
common theme emerging.
“We all seem to love
the sense of community
and connectedness,”
she says. Aside from the
cuisine, Tara’s favourite
thing about Barcelona is
its location, right by the
Collserola Hills. “I like to
break out of the city for
long walks and rustic
lunches with friends
there,” she says.
MARIANO HERRERA
They say variety is
the spice of life, which
is why Mariano’s career
is so hot, peppered with
the different people
he shoots, the places
he gets to visit and the
range of publications –
from
Esquire
to
Monocle
– that he works on.
Originally from Buenos
Aires, Mariano moved
to Barcelona to study
photography 15 years
ago and his latest shoot
for us saw him working
in his adopted city –
much to his delight and
our advantage: “I know
Barcelona so well – the
light, the corners and
most of all the people.”
See the results on p66.
MELIZA MYBURGH
There’s no backdrop
more perfect for a
spot of rock climbing,
canoeing and snorkelling
than the islands of Malta,
Gozo and Camino,
and these are just a
few of the things that
South African-born
photographer Meliza
Myburgh got up to on
her shoot for this month’s
issue (see p58). “I love
any photography that
can take me outdoors,
get me active and really
involved in the location,”
she says. “The scenery
was fantastic and the
golden light of the late
afternoon sun on the
sea made my work even
easier,” she adds.
